heheh painted during last stretch of senior project...flipped through some magazines, saw a picture of the lovely Rihanna, and decided to do a slightly-caricatured portrait. who knew watercolors would be so fun?
comments/critiques greatly appreciated --- watercolors on watercolor paper (~20 minutes)
Hi there! I'm here to pass on all the fabulous feedback this pieces got at #Traditional-Artists's Critique Night!
I hope this is helpful and you can use it for your future work
By ~Ze-RoFruits: "Well.. I'm not a big fan of Rihanna, but I gotta say, that this is a really nice portrait of her. I really like the strong expression in her eyes and the colors are well chosen, especially the blue compared to her darker skin color. I'd suggest to smoothen the lines in the background to make the stokes less visible, which I think would give more harmony to the overall painting. The strokes on the hair are good the way they are now, because it shows the texture of the hair pretty well ^^ Besides that, I really like how the lips are done (also, the color looks really nice and natural)."
By ~Tenzeh: "Very well done piece, eyes are so alive, I feel like I'm looking at the real person's eyes!piece is very nice and color of skin is very well chosen. Maybe a little work over the shoulder it looks great."
By ~Elveanna: "I really like this piece! It's very sexy, with these large, dark lashes that highlight the eyes (that are very beautiful, by the way). I like the way you shaded and the general skin tone, but it would be nice to have either purplish shadows or brownish, not both. It makes her forehead look slightly yellowish. The mouth is gorgeous, with the tiny shadow between the lips giving it life. What bothers me a bit is that it seems that the colour of her right eyelash and eyebrow are somehow... washed out? Is that a scanner thing or intended? The darkness that underlines the eyes is so gorgeous, losing it here would take quite some impact. Finally, I want to say that it is a beautiful picture, caricatured but still recognisable, and very well done!"
By ~XxSeizaxX: "That I have to say I agree with what you guys are saying. I really like her lips, the colour choice and her eyes they are very bright. Personally, I think I do like the blue in the background is darker and lighter (Couldn't think of the word ). I think it looks good that way, I also really like the pink on her cheeks. It gives her a more happy expression I think."
By *Feidhelm: "For something that only took 20 minutes, it looks better than what I make in 1 hour. However, I don't know if it was intended, but it looks like a caricature to me. The features are exaggerated and the head is very big, compared to her shoulders. I have two suggestions to make. First of all, try to make the eye on the right as small as the one in the left. Also, whenever you make a portrait, try to fit the entire head in the picture. I always get the feeling that the painting is unfinished or accidentally cropped if there's parts of the head missing. Other than that, I like the way you used colors, especially the purples used for shading and the pinks used for the blushes."
